When you send an email out to hundreds or thousands of people, you have to put your best foot forward in order to have the best open rate.
So, what’s that best foot? It’s your email subject. Go for creative, compelling, and informative, without giving too much away.*
Your email subject is an hugely important element in the success of your email campaign. What defines success? Open rates, for starters!
First – what not to do. DON’T…
- … put dollars amounts in the subject (spam filters will eat these emails up)
- … use words like “bonus” or “free” (view a full list of spam suspect words here)
- … use too many exclamation points (more spam filter food)
There’s an exception to the above, which is if the recipients are used to receiving (and opening) emails from you (i.e. you are not a new Email-Blast.ca client), then you can occasionally include these words in the email subject. But if you’re a stranger to someone’s inbox, do NOT lead with spam-suspicious words.
Conversely, DO…
- … send the email from your personal name, not a company name
- … tell the recipient what’s inside (teases get opens)
- … be concise – clear messaging wins over clever
- … start your subject with an action-oriented verb**
- … reference the benefit to the email recipient, rather than attributes of the thing you’re promoting
(for example: “View the lowest-priced 2-bedroom in Yaletown” vs “2 bed 2 bath condo at Yaletown Park” - … think outside the box – your priority is getting the open, so if that means being cheeky or mysterious, try it out! Use a subject line that makes people stop, think and wonder.***
Here are some ideas for email subjects that you can borrow and customize for your real estate listing emails:
- Can you help me sell this [area] condo/townhouse/house?
- Stunning, Must-See [description or feature or property type] in [area]
- Unique [description]
- Includes the wine cellar of your clients’ dreams!
- This [description] in [area] is worth seeing!
The key here is… stay away from spam filters, and see if you can be enticing in your wording. Think about the marketing emails you receive and what makes YOU open them up – and then apply that tactic to the emails you’re sending out.
The same applies to your email newsletters… nothing is worse than receiving a monthly email newsletter from someone with a subject of “Monthly Newsletter”. SNORE, right!?!
DON’T BE THAT PERSON 🙂
